A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. USGICollector. Another V has just come to notice, Underwood, not mine, There's a a guy on a local forum asking questions about it. Will see if I can find out more. The stock doesn't smell right to me. Mike.

Mike great pictures and great carbines. The modified sights are a neat part of the carbine's history and are more times than not an indicator of originality. At least they are not humping these to the best of my knowledge.

Here's one of the 4.5 Rock. This one's not a V or notch, but been modified so that the outer portions perfectly match the wings on the front sight. When sighting, there is uncluttered access to the front sight post. On the bottom of the stock next to the trigger guard, carved in small letters: B AA

The markings on the bottom. These actually appear to be burned into the stock, as the letters are raised and they appear to be charred and are much more legible in person. No way to know for sure but may have been the person/armorer who did the work on the rear sight. Wishful thinking anyhow.

Thanks David. Many people where I am think these Carbines are not of interest, claiming that they have been altered by individual "backyard or garage, amateur gunsmiths". The emerging evidence certainly suggests that this is not the case. Mike.

Mike, These were done by the men who carried them. They grew up using hunting rifles with opened sights and many could not get used to the peep sight on the carbine so a little work with a file and they could shoot like they used to back home on the farm. These modifications are not the result of bubba trying to improve it and are a great piece of a carbines history. It's the same thing with many of the Bavarian returns with the modified rear sights except done in Germanyicon by the groups who issued them post war.
