    Like Emri said, I've gathered that Mark I's had a "black oil dye" applied over the park in the exposed areas. Do not remove it.

    The black paint I mentioned was applied at time of manufacture. It was applied over the parkerized metal only on the areas I mentioned. From what I can see in your pics, your rifle appears to me to have been re-finished.
