    yes it looks like it was sanded down to remove the groove in it, im pretty sure you shouldnt be able to see the rivet head from that angle

    That might be it, I've seen them before with grooves narrower at the back. I thought that style might have been standard on some, but maybe only on later or postwar handguards?? Let's see if that guy in Michigan with several boxes of "spares" has a comment. - Bob
