Here is some more of the family, Enfield, Maltby, Savage Mk I. Have yet to find a Savage Mk I* fitted up with a scope, do have a "less telescope" example, only seen a Fazakerly T in photo's, would love to come across one.

That's an interesting photo because the Maltby in the middle is wearing a Trials No4 forend. Notice the very straight bottom edge, as on the actual Trials No4 to the right.

That seems noteworthy to me, because if as we assume, the early Maltby and Savage No4(T) conversions were actually done at RSAF(E), not H&H, they would of course have had just those forends on hand, and if the original was found unsuitable, no doubt a replacement would have been fitted from those very same trials parts.

Of course it is conceivable that the forend was fitted by H&H or just happened to be fitted by an armourer, but the chances of that, especially the latter, seem pretty slim to me. We believe the left over trials parts were sent to Fazakerly to be used up in their learning process, but if the No.4(T) program was still in progress at RSAF(E) they might well have retained parts they thought they might need for that purpose: like forends.

Am just about to head for the Channel Tunnel for a week on The Somme (it just keeps calling me back!) but I must try & get some photo's of a few of mine.

Have 31 & 33 Trials, 2 Maltby, one S Mk1, two S Mk1*'s (one scopeless & one scoped), LB44 with Mk2 scope, two 90L 45's but one lacking scope, 44 TP rifle, two 41 B marked BSA's & few each of BSA 43, 44, & 45 rifles. I guess I was INCREDIBLY lucky when a certain UK arms dealer was disposing of 140 No4 T's fifteen years ago - they were stripped to varying degrees, but they were, even by the prices at the time, SOOO cheap I could afford to keep pretty well as many as I wanted.....

I doubt it'll never happen again.....but I remain eternally grateful to the vendors for calling me first!

Good eye, the Maltby is mysterious, only if she could talk. All the small bits are Singer made, including the waisted forsight protector. The forend is off a Trials but was never re-serial numbered to the Maltby action. No Enfield proof on the front pad and unfortuntely the butt is a mid-war replacement with the rifle s/n stamped into the flat instead of the scope number.

My last eye candy for a while, a NOS '44 BSA. Roger get some pic's up!! I too am off on vacation as of........now, so no rush
