Lots of guys did that because they suffered abrasion from the straps...some had too big wrists. I doubt that was his problem.

Troops wore watches like that - through the top button hole - to keep them out of the water crossing rivers, rice paddies, etc. At least we did in Vietnam.

The watch looks like one of the three piece non waterproof Ordnance cases. Probably a Waltham.
