Its definitely not a Military cross screw.

Notice the extra surface created forward of the magazine well, its built up with lead.

Its quite common on these type of Target rifles, have another by Fulton's and it is exactly the same.
    Regards Simon

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. Yes Simon. I started target shooting in the 60s. Played with and still have one in similar style that was my Fathers but is a Lithgowicon.
Had my tongue firmly in my cheek when i typed in the Ishy screw bit

Barrel bearing surface was built using cork or is this old, familiar, wood?

We all seem to forget that the so called 'ishy screw' was in fact a UKicon military modification introduced to save otherwise serviceable fore-ends from scrap.

I have not forgotten Peter i was just baiting the hook. It also has been used as Fultons did to strengthen the forend to remove the flex. I know just in the mind. but it did help hide poor draws fit and stop that exploding coach wood from going bang By the way merry xmas.
