Wrt the brass sling hardware....seems that somewhat subdued and hidden if possible would be best. No need to provide a shiny reflecting target while at sling arms on march or patrol. So...brass in and un-shined if in the field. Get your parade sling & kit out if in the barracks and Brasso away. But....keep an old sling with your field pack or bag

Think these lads in the photo are cadets. The rifles are taller than the middle pair

That's what I understood. I was just trying to find out what they wore as a matter of fact...if we still know that is.

Some time in WW2. It was common for school cadet corps to wear these obsolete uniforms; the older boy has got the then-current battledress and was apparently old enough to be in the Home Guard.

And the Home Guard corporal does seem to have the top buckle on the outside but the bottom buckle inside. Hmmmm.......

Or am I just looking too hard?

I see it to, but it's probably just an optical delusion.

The unifoms that they're wearing are what we used to call SD's which I think, stood for Service Dress. When I was an apprentice, the regular Army were still wearing the old BD's, - Battle Dress (as indeed were we, while I was in my school Cadet Force) and as apprentices, we wore these old SD uniforms. Most were open neck but a good 20% or so were still close neck variants. We also had those dopey 'CAPS, SD Stiff' for best, just to make us look stupid and the usual berets for everyday. Great period photo

    You are correct...

Thanks Peter, I was thinking you may have a handle on this because of your early days. And when you enlisted, Centurion was a rank, not a tank...
