It does have a pad of some sort in the center of the portion that would rest between your shoulder blades. The QD hooks at the waist do not look as though they would hold under combat conditions.

A bit more from kaekee. Now I need to find the continer to complete the ensamble.
The only Section J2 VAOS we have is for 1939 and the this Carrier was not then listed, only the squarer pack for 2 Containers (J2/JA 6506). The attached (date unknown) doesn't list a code, so it was probably still N.I.V., being a later wartime introduction. We've not had time to collate dates of mfr for yr Carrier, to see when it might've been introduced.
J2/JA code t.b.d. Containers, portable, 1 1/2-gal., portable, carriers, web. Apologies for quality of the attachments, but old-style "wet copies", done a very long time back.
