M1 Barrel Bore Guage Reading

I wouldn't think a counterbored muzzle would be too common. I saw scads of carbines in the past, I've never even heard of anyone having one. Or seeing one. I'd think that would disappear when they were examined for serviceability after turn in...regular maintenance...

"YES" If the muzzel got damaged, as in dropped muzzel first, over cleaned with steel rod, hit hard object while dogding bullets, etc. They would back bore to remove damage and restore the rifling at the muzzel. GK

I,ve seen pic's of recrowned barrels but like you I've seen no back bored barrels. GK

Years ago when I was dealing in guns at gun shows, I got a Blue Sky ($129 from RSR) that had a counter bored muzzle. That was the only one I have ever seen. My current carbine (6 digit Inland) has an Underwood replacement barrel (year only, with a space for month) that has an ME of "0", probably put on in the post war rebuild. I have had several that gauged around "2" that shot as well as the "0" does. Accuracy is largely affected by "stock hang" as the CMP points out. The first thing I do is check that.

I did have one that swallowed the gauge, that was not counter-bored. It shot a 12" group at 50 yards. The bore was awful, too. I sold it to a guy to make a plugged barrel blank shooter for re-enacting.

I have an extra Barrel and want to trade it with this guy and he sent me a picture with a Muzzle bore guage and ask to send him one, so i sent him the pictures and he ask what does the bore read ? like the one he had, so i thought why dont i just buy one for the sakeof it just to have. myself i cant have enough tools or parts, i keep everything i might want to sell or trade oe whatever and thats one tool i dont have. when i purchased my m1 it had so many parts, it even had a gi piton nut wrench with a new piston and nut, i kept those just in case a friend needs one or he wants to trade, i just like to have whatever tool or part i can sell or trade or have if anyone i know needs something, thanks
