I got a HRA Correct Grade a few days ago that had gobs of cosmoline
inside it. I used my wife's blow drier and a roll of paper towels to remove the cosmo. Field strip it, wipe off the globs with paper towels, then lay the parts on some newspapers and use the blow drier. The blow drier liquifies the cosmo and it drips off or can be wiped off. It works on the wood too. No smell at all and it can be done indoors.

I never had trouble using the tub to soak stocks in TSP for major cleanups. Then I had a brain **** while one stock finish would not lift off. So I coated it in polyurethane remover and laid that in the tub. it started turning white
it was melting the tub and fusing the redish stock finish into the tubs material

Before using any solvents or hot water I use paper towels to get the heavy stuff off. Then, after most is removed, I use the hot water and on real small parts (bolt internals, etc.) brake cleaner and a tooth brush or swab. Once everything is dry I lubricate each part with a coat of CLP Collectors. Don't forget to take a cleaning rod with a patch down the barrel too. Big old plugs come out there. I have heard mineral spirits work but never tried it. Best of luck!
