Well guys thanks for all the leads to follow, I can now say confidently that it is a Fabrique Nationale M1930 Short Rifle, one of the original contract of 16,500 built for the Venezuelan Government between 1932 and 1937, I can tell this from the missing markings on the woodwork and the rear sling swivel position.

The rifle was scrubbed and re-barreled in 7.62 x 51 by the Spanish at the Corona plant, I would hazard a guess around the time of the FR7 and FR8 conversions gleaned from the proof stamps under the barrel so anywhere from 1947 - 1952ish.

Now can anyone recommend a really good reference book on the Military Mauser and all it's marks and models?

Why oh why isn't there a Germanicon Peter Laidlericon on here

Mauser Military Rifles of the World by Robert W.D. Ball is good one.

I second that, it is a good generalist book with information on most the military mausers out there. It is not a all knowing book but it is a good reference book or place to start (especially for those mausers from countries there is little information on)
