The ZB mags were probably imported by Global Trades - Armory USA years ago. The owner supposedly had a warehouse full of guns, parts, ammo, etc. Some of it started showing up at local gun shows earlier this year after he passed away. That’s where I bought one; mistakenly thinking it was a Mk1 .303 Bren mag. There was also a new in the box milled receiver from Arsenal, Sofia, Bulgaria, serial number “X 5”, a box of new SLR-100H receivers and lots of Bulgarian AK parts. Apparently Mr. Yates imported quite a bit from Bulgaria.

.....Vince, that makes total sense. Now, even more curious as to whether or not they knew that they had actually imported ZB39 mags!! Doubtful......I bet that's why they're still in that pictured crate!

What's interesting is that the L4 shown has a skeletonised butt slide (see trigger mech), has a standard Mk2 gun butt slide and the Mk2 cocking handle.

Hi Peter, This isn't a real L4, the barrel is L4A1, the lower is a SKN as you said and the body is a standard but bodged Mk2.

It is a UK Deac which was for sale last year and was then bought by a guy in Lincolnshire. I think he realised it was rubbish and tried to sell it at the price of a genuine L4. When I told him what it was and that I would buy it, but for a lot less money, I never heard from him or seen it since.

The photo of the signalman (thread 16) shows the units that were the last to get rid of the Bren/L4. The GPMG never really took hold in these 'corps troops' armouries and L4's remained until the L85 light support weapon trickled in. Intelligence Corps, Signals, REME, Transport......... you know the sort of thing

Incidentally, it looks like Bulford ranges with the (unseen) road behind going towards Tidworth to the left (Bulford to the R). During the war and well into the 50's, there were a few Vickers MMG firing points along the hill ridge line in the background. These Vickers used to fire over the road into one of the butts that you can see from the road. There were two Vickers ranges locally. Bulford Gallery and Netheravon field firing ranges

Sorry to back track, but looking at that picture of the demil recievers, i'd say they would be difficult in the extreme to rebuild, however a Mk II reciever rear section chunk with the body pin hole intact could be used as a replacement bit for the L4 if it wasn't cut thru the hole.
