You gotta love this. I have the twin to that QHMC! The serial number of that carbine is 1582401. I have 1582375 and it looks almost identical! That is only 26 numbers apart. Is there any way you can allow me access to your site so I can download those photos? I can't do it t he way it currently is set up.

    Thanks

Very cool GPlourde, the only thing I see on your QHMC carbine is the stake marks of a later type II or III rear sight. The sight you have looks real but It has replaced the later sight. That type of stake mark was not used in that area of the dovetail with a type I.

Not trying to flame ya Bill, but look closely at the stake mark. Early in QHMCs production, they used a round punch and staked the flip sight bases at the corners of the sight base. Note that the stake is at the rear of the base, too far back from the edge of the dovetail for an adjustable sight which would be right on the edge and partially covered by a flip sight base. Sometime later they started the chisel type staking, and at one point were using both methods before they switched entirely over to the chisel type staking. GPs guns is right as rain!

Here's a photo of the two carbines. Notice that the stake marks are in the same location on the right rear.

    Rear sight punch mark

My 15803xx has the small punch mark at the right rear and also at the right front too in the same location as the back one. did quality mark them on right front and back on some or not.

You're right Jim, it does look the same. Egg on my face...thought they quit using that method way before the 4.7m block.
I did a bunch of research on QHMC guns for an article I did a few years back, seemed that the round punch marks were not reported beyond the 1.9m range in the data I had to look at. Thing that's interesting on your gun is that the punch mark extends up into the sight base and there's no chisel marks to indicate the punch mark came later.
I had a collector out west that sent a picture of a 1.58m gun that had the punch mark on all four corners of the sight base...seems there's a lot of flavors of the staking on the QHMC guns! Thanks for the pic.
