Ole Ft. Ord was really jumpin' when I was there back in June-Aug. of '69. Tons of "cruits!! You go to 'Nam, you get blown away was the battle cry of all the DI's.

Oh Yeah! Fort Ord, California.
Arrived there in July and left in December. Basic training: B/4/2 Infantry AIT: B/2/2
Memories: Freezing in the morning and frying in the afternoon. Morning runs to the beach ranges with field jackets on, taking off the field jackets at the range and sitting in the freezing temperatures then running back to the barracks in the afternoon under the hot sun. Ice plants and jack rabbits. The DI's mirror aviator sunglasses (Drill Sgt. Gitchell for basic and Drill Sgt. Oguma for AIT). Favorite song: "It never rains in Southern Calfornia" as we stood in waist deep water in our foxholes during our AIT FTX.
As Bob Hope sang "Thanks for the memories..."

I did a couple of go's in CA, (four I think) never experienced the rain though. I was out in Pendleton around the FIBUA site for a while, lots of cactus and dry gulch there. Spent my nights sleeping with lizards and snakes... Better you than me brother... Top pic are some HARD CORE mf's though...

Ha, ha, ha! The guy on the left was a reservist who went back to his Reserve unit after AIT and the two guys on the right went to jump school with me then volunteered to be parachute riggers. Nothing against what they did because my son was a rigger at Ft. Bragg for 4 years and the became a Civil Affairs Reservist when he got out. The HARD CORE (CORP) term just amused me.
