Yes I had forgotten that part of the book HOH and you just jogged my memory of it truly was a tragedy up there with the other one in WWII the "Wilhelm Gustloff" torpedoed by a Russian
sub with a total loss of life from figures researched by Heinz Schön make the total loss in the sinking to be 9,343 total, including about 5,000 children the most loss of life in the sinking of a single ship ever. That book is called the "Cruelest Night" it is a pretty harrowing read as well

I know quite well about the Gustloff.
In Germany
, a few years ago, I could see a very interesting and impressing documentary on that vessel.
Will be one of my next topics for sure.
