BSA "Garden Gun" in .410

Quick update on this - I cleaned the chamber as suggested and everything is now fabulous EXCEPT the extractor is very very worn and doesn't always grasp the rim of the shell. Does anyone have any idea of the extractor used on these? Was it the standard Long Lee bolt head and catch??

Not a standard bolt head.

Not a standard LE extractor. But one could be modified to fit I am sure.

I think that's a defect of the .410 case, where the rim is often poorly shaped.

The .22 shot shells are for pest control. I go mouse and squirrel hunting inside the barn. Doesn't make holes in the corrugated steel roof. And yes, short range only, but it does the job. An old single shot Cooey is perfect, but they will feed through a tube magazine too.

For bigger critters, I have the 410. Carrying cartridges in No.7-1/2 shot, No.6 shot and slugs.
Great little gun and weighs nothing.

Absolutely. Different brands have different rims.

With this action, extraction is as positive as in the LE with primary and secondary extraction. It doesn't eject, the bolt is drawn back and the case just lays on the receiver shoe. The empty can be removed by hand or the gun just flicked to the right to dump it out.

Key no doubt, is a sharp extractor with a good spring. With that and a clean smooth chamber, it should hook just about anything out.

You do not have a location ie country listed so here is a guess. If your in the US then the 410 round is different. the British 410 round is it's own thing not a US round. You need to find a British 410 round.

The 3" cartridge seems to be more common in America; the 2 1/2" one is more common here (and some guns chambered for the 2" - good luck finding those)

In the US we have the 2 1/2" shotshell and the 3" shotshell. Also had a major US dealer was selling the British Enfield shotgun rounds for a long period. Someone that shares my Gun show tables bought several 100 rounds and has been selling them. I think I bought over 100 and an original ammo box for them. Also most of the stories that I've heard is they were issued to the India prison guards as a single shot shotgun. Just what I've heard.

I wish I could get my hands on some of that musket ammo here in Canada.

I read an article in an Indian newspaper dated 2010 about prison guards wanting to replace their muskets with modern firearms. Since the ammo showed up at US retailers a couple years later, I would guess that they were finally replaced and the existing ammo stock sold off.
