Interesting you should mention cogswell and harrison. I got a No.1 sporter some weeks back e time that I was told was a C and H product. it has a ramp added to the normal front sight to create the image of a sporting front sight (bit weird I thought) but it is generally quite nicely done.

I know of that front sight ramp 'cover', of pressed sheet steel construction held in place by the sight insert? A Parker Hale accessory?

Sounds strange indeed to be on a C & H finished rifle. Could of course have been added by a subsequent owner.

It does make the first impression of the rifle to be more "commerical sporter" than "sporterised No1"

    BSA #2

It is /was a BSA" High Velocity Sporter #2". The #2 and 3 sporter's feel like a Badminton racket compared to cut down #1 or #4. The #1 sporter model is a little less dynamic because of the barrel rib.

What makes you so sure it is/was a #2?

It's had a hard and probably very interesting life and looks to have been reblued, but would be at the top of the line for quality when new.
The "25" date and adjoining marks indicate the barrel is apparently an ex-SMLE barrel put on at some point, no doubt to replace a worn original. The migrating solder under the backsight supports that conclusion.
On the bright side, you can pack it without worrying about damaging a pristine original.
The SMLE barrel would suit MkVII ball, but the original would have been set up for the 215gr. Mk.VI ball. The sights probably still are.
