Help Identifying a M1903 Stock

You could probably get a GI C stock which is nicely cut down to go with it. sculpt it so it fits your hand just so, maybe some checkering if you like. I would not be afraid to drill it and install a retro scope on it either.

The long and short of it is it’s very far from military and much closer to a sporter already. The 1903 makes a great sporter and has for nearly a century...so you can’t get much more classic than that.
I would second the reccomendation to get a nicely chopped C stock for it. Those are relatively easy to find and would look great on this.
I’d also have to agree that drilling for a scope mount wouldn’t be the end of the world. The high polish blue has already killed the value anyway.
However, if I were to put holes in this, they’d be for a peep sight. Now that’s classic.

So due to the sporterization of the barrel, would a normal straight stock not be suited for the gun? Only a sporter stock would work?

Is a cut down no longer military stock... You could buy one by Reinhart Fajen or Bishops or several other manufacturers that embody the full pistol grip and cheek rest for scope use.

It would fit but a C stock would luck much nicer (in my opinion) as a sporter. That’s all haha.

I would NOT risk ruining or butchering up that M1903 Original Scant stock to fit an 03A3 that is bright blued with a short barrel! Sell it to someone who appreciates it and will use it on an '03, use the money to complete this as a sporter. Regarding the proper outcome, I suspect your uncle was on his way to making a sporter and the scant stock is just something he had "in inventory". I too would go for a sporter stock and scope it - either with an S&K No Drill setup or have a pro put a mount on it in a jig. It is a bit too far gone to restore - and there is nothing wrong with an 03A3 sporter. The advantage of finding a used (or new) sporter stock over a cut down "C" stock is that you can get a higher comb for the scope this way. CC

My grandfather did have an unfinished sporter stock he was likely planning on using but it has a right handed shooter cheek pad cut on it and I am a left handed shooter. Is it easy to find left handed sporters?
