I think it is relatively easy to modify mag capacity, but jumping the legal hoops complicates things...like it always does. A wodden or metal spacer is the easy way, which is legal in shotguns, but I think the rules are a bit more stringent with high-capacity mags. It may very well depend on the attitude of the game warden you happen to bump into that day. Canada allows mags to be modified with a pop-rivet. Only drilling a small hole thru the housing and snapping-in a rivet is about as easy as it gets, save just dropping in a spacer. Good Luck!

Promag makes a 5 rounder. No idea if they're reliable. Cheaper than Dirt wants $17.97 for one. Only downside is they can be somewhat difficult to grab onto when in the rifle.
If you go with the blocking, make sure MI's MNR allows it. A rivet in the back below the lugs works.
"...They would not fit..." Universal stuff was like that. More their later stuff though. A polymer mag is very late. Most Universals came with regular steel mags.
Make sure the S&B ammo is accurate enough out of that Carbine. Used Speer 110 grain HP's with IMR4227 for eons before the Carbine was declared evil up here. Makes a hole the size of a grapefruit in a ground hog. Wouldn't think twice about using it for our big deer.

A word of caution: Many years ago I purchased a nice looking carbine. Quickly found it shot high. Brazed an extension on the front site. Things appeared great until I noticed that it was really load sensitive. Careful looking at it revealed through the now worn parkerizing, that the receiver was a "re-weld" and the barrel had the remains of a pin welded up. My suspicion is that it was a blank firing movie prop. Immediately it was disassembled and the parts used to make up one with a new commercial barrel and a salvage receiver. Note: this gun is stamped to prevent anyone selling it as an original.
