At the risk of going off the original topic, I have experience of the comments about guns making it through the war intact or not. I have bought three WWII K98 rifles that fall into this category.

The first one that I bought was a 'Russian capture' and it was made up of a whole lot of miscellaneous parts. I didn't realise this at the time I bought it. It was a complete turnip. Wouldn't group and therefore could not be zeroed. When I have bought subsequent K98s I have always checked that their numbers match (with the exception that I have not seen one where the bolt matches the rifle). The two that I currently own are very nice rifles and shoot to point of aim. I have had one of them converted to Sniper specification based on photos in Peter R. Senich's book 'The German Sniper 1914-1945.
