Back in the 1950's and 1960's there were two categories of high power rifles used in NRA competition. Service rifle which was the M1
rifle, and NRA Match Rifle which could have been
any type of bolt action rifle. Most common were the Winchester model 70 and modified 1903 or '03A3. Just to make sure my memory was not failing me I went back and looked at
pictures of custom rifles in the 1960 and 1961 Gun Digests. Pictured were rifles with rollover cheek pieces and long curved pistol grips. Obviously the person who modified the subject rifle was trying to copy, with a low budget, one of those custom rifles. It was obviously designed as a hunting rifle but would be legal as an NRA Match Rifle.
