Safe Dilemmas

Convert a closet? It's on my list of todo's to frame out a secure closet in the unfinished area my basement. I was thinking of making an out swing Murphy-style door, but will probably just end up making a flush-fit door and hinges similar to a safe door. Which reminds me - why are the vault doors sooooo expensive? $1749 on sale for the smallest ones? For half that price you could get a safe, cut the front off of it and bolt it into a door frame.

My small safe is the better of the two, very good fire rating. My dream is to create a room in the basement somewhere with a vault door. My concern is it can be damp there so I have to have dehumidifiers running constantly which is a concern. I have a cistern under the kitchen, and I've often thought of making that a gun room with limited access. Not sure how deep it is but it's roughly 9x9 with an arched brick ceiling. It would be nice. As it holds water, it would probably also keep it out once drained. I've been talking about doing this for 30 years so not super likely it's going to happen.

They make a rod that drops down into the muzzle that has a loop an hook top on it. This loop part attaches to the rug type on the top of the safe. You can add more rifle closer together with this system Look up [ RIFLE ROD SYSTEM] on ebay.
As far as fire rating you only have 45 minutes before the safe fails. I know from my own experience. My house fire was so hot that the rifles inside the safe burned. An my safe was in the walk-in basement.
Thief's only want guns they can move fast or hide on the body. They dont want hunting rifles. Anything AR,AK types or pistols.

I made some rifle rods with plastic rods and toy wheels (Hobby Lobby) put velcro disks on the wheel faces and on the bottom of the top shelf. Works pretty well. The walk in basement safe is the best bet IMO. A radiant oil filled heater will probably be sufficent to keep the humidity at bay sort of like a giant Rifle Rod dehumidifier for a standard safe. I just helped install a dehumidifier system in an underground storm shelter. It drains into a vat with a float acctuated sump pump to evacuate the collected water thru PVC pipe to the exterior so no having to remember to empty the dehumidifier
