    It was the early heavy old MOBAT that had a sliding breech mechanism. They were stripped right down when the newer Land Rover mounted WOMBAT was introduced. The armoured shield was removed plus loads of superflous stuff (and I think the traversing gear too which made it friction rotatable - but correct me if I'm wrong). It kept the .303" Bren ranging gun that matched the trajectory of the 120mm HESH round. It immediately became reasonably portable and towable but not as light as the Wombat

    Sort of works out the same then. With no FV 432 to carry stores, it would need a full platoon to man pack and be effective. And right, where would that have come from?
