    Attic finds

Thunderbox, a fellow RFD from Brighton (his initials are D F-J) had two Gew98s handed in, 92-year-sleepers found in an attic - remarkably similar story to yours. Both mint bores, surface rust, totally untouched since 1918. One has a strand of barbed wire blown into its butt by an explosion, and shrapnel scars to the wood.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Thats nice to see. I too have a 1915 Enfield with the original wood with matching serials and 1915 barrel. Mine never had volley sights but the windage adjustable sight was "updated".
Mine has a bunch of inspection stamps on the left wrist with dates into the 1930s but the only thing that was changed was the rear sight it seems.
Nice to see the NZicon stamped sling too.

It seems that old rifles forgotten in lofts have a better chance of survival in the UKicon than in Africa. Herewith a photo of a rare Martini Metford Mk.II, Natal Pattern, found in the roof of a neglected barn in Natal. Thanks to the termites!

    Thunderbox, that's a great find!

Is it a keeper, or will you be putting it up for sale?

    All the best

    Mike
