My Vista operating system works perfect. It took some getting used to but now I like it over the XP.

    It's still at it......

Turned on,got on line for every bit of 2 min. and Microsoft butts in and takes control away from me,40 min's,4 downloads,3 total shut downs and 3 start ups later before I get control back, thought for a while maybe it was my ISP,Norton Anti-Virus or some other program causing Microsoft to horn in and make changes, checked and it's none of them,I have not installed any programs, has the same load it came with, have done scans,no evidence of virus shows up,can't find anything thats been pre-scheduled,beats me as to what is going on.

    Ray,

You have "Install auto-updates automatically" turned on by default to download and install them when they are available, it's not Microsoft or Vista problems. And you're on dial-up which lenghtens the whole procedure.

Read your help files on "Auto Updates."

Ray you can fix this easy if you want to.

Start/control panel/Security Center/Turn automatic updates on or off/click- Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them. This is what I have done to both our Vista and XP computers and it works well for us.

As an IT pro that has to deal with the general public on a daily basis whose knowledge of computers ranges from absolutely nothing to just enough to be dangerous , I have found the same thing that the others have found...Vista is a good OS AS LONG AS THE HARDWARE IS SUPPORTED. Do not try to install Vista on an old XP box cause it will not work reliably.

I have not made the switch to Vista and I do not see myself doing that anytime in the forseeable simply because I cannot afford the new hardware what with a 7 year old that thinks eating constantly is nothing strange, a 17 yr old in high school, a 20 yr old in college and an ex-wife that will throw mew in the hoosegow if the child support is not in her hand on the appointed day .

    Down load history............

Checked the installed down load history, have a page and a half of them with 4 errors,2 in Office and 2 in Security, just deleted them, turned off auto downloading, going to look into it later to see if I can schedule a time for the auto downloading to occur,if not,I'll just manually check for them every couple of days, don't know if those with errors could have caused some kind of conflicts or not.

Well it's wonderful to hear that the OS I am now somewhat proficient with is now on life support. I stayed with Win 95 till I had no choice but go to 98 and stayed with that till I had no choice but to go to XP. The wife has Vista but I looked till I found one of the last out there with Xp after previous computer died after downloading service pak 3. After 6 weeks of reboots and hours on the telephone line with so called service techs which only 1 out of about every 15 spoke English that you could understand and having to buy new discs that didn't work I had to buy the new puter. The old one followed me to range one day anf got in the way of several 30.cal bullets. For some reason I felt better at the end of that day.

Oh how I wish I could. I use several graphics programs that have to be either Mac or Win, one cost several thousand dollars. Most graphic artist types like Macs, but people I have to email drawings back and forth to generally all run PC's so that's what I chose.

What chaps me about Vista is the lack of hardware compatibility. My secretary/bookkeepers machine with XP died and we replaced it with Vista 64 bit. Never knew it can't work with my Canon fax/phone/lazer printer. They have a driver for 32 bit, but not for a 64.

    Phillip,

Thirty-two bit software runs on Vista 64. What's the problem? Run your 32 bit driver. I'm running a 5 year old HP Lasjet 1160 with HP 32 bit drivers without a problem.
