Peter.
Some of the numbers you listed have shown up with others. Were these numbers you observed while in Service, or were they numbers culled from scope repairs? Or a mixture of both?
Are you aware why these later rifles were all given a 'seperate' serial number batch? I think I relate the H&H input at LB where they got them to 'production line' the No4T production using ONE single batch of barrelled actions from ONE source. Just as they did from BSA production
It would certainly make a lot more sense to do the machining, drilling and tapping of the receiver before it was hardened and finished. A normal LB receiver is very hard towards the back. It must have been murder trying to do the modifications on already produced rifles. It also makes sense to do it right the first time rather than selecting rifles that for some magical reason almost got it right on the regular production line, then modifying them.Originally Posted by Peter Laidler
In the case of the sporterised 90L T rifle I am currently restoring, the junior gunsmith who took the hacksaw to the rifle also replaced two BSF screws with UNF bolts. These were the rear thumbscrew for the scope, and the target swivel/kingscrew just forward of the magazine. In both cases the threads changed on the grade 5 bolts rather than on the rifle's receiver. Believe me, that was a relief to find as neither repair would have been easy. I am not even sure if BSF helicoils even exist.
Edited to add: I guess one should look before one makes a statement: 1 4 BSF Helicoil V Coil Thread Repair Insert Kit | eBay

90L8269 - I have the bolt from this LB T and it is in new condition. The rest of it was stolen from the previous owner long ago.
90L8249 - scope and mount I purchased from the the same seller. My receipt shows the rifle serial number, but I didn't write down the scope #. Stupidly, I sold it for $250 in shotgun news. Again, the rest of this rig was stolen back in the 1980s.
I checked through my register back to when my friend & I bought the batch of rifles in 1997. The following rifles (all scopeless) were included:
90L8048,
90L8055,
90L8063,
90L8207,
90L8299,
90L8323.
71L0632 & 71L0432 were also in amongst them FWIW.
Any records on 71L0644 Rog?Originally Posted by Roger Payne
