    Charlie,
    That picture was taken by my (now deceased) father-in-law in Alaska in 1950.
    US Army was involved in a rail & road building project.
    I have a few pictures of the tour but only two show M1icon-Carbines. Both pictures show carbines that had escaped a later rebuild.

    And the fellow above is on Bear watch!
