Thought I'd post one of my carbines

Hey Bill, the notches are on my deer rifle. It's a Remington 788 in 7mm 08 Rem. It has a Tasco 2-7 scope. It has been my prime hunting rifle for over twenty years. I shoot lefty most of the time. I have learned to live with the bolt action. All of the notches are for deer here in central Wisconsin. Some years you get skunked, and like last year I got two, one out of a tree stand and one a buck on the jump over an open field, that I killed on the third shot. So far since Sat. our opening of "gun season" I have seen 19 deer and two small bucks but let them all go. We try to shoot only 2 1/2 year old bucks here on my place, or a big dry doe if we need the meat. It pays off in seeing big bucks and that is what makes hunting exciting for me. I'm taking today off deer hunting to catch the last day of duck season and will be back at trying to get the big buck tomorrow. Have a good one.....Frank

Yeah fellas, I'm hittin' the rum again. I knew those notches were NOT on a carbine! Wood is all wrong, color, finish! So there!

i noticed that too, but thought maybe it was a plainfield carbine (instead of a 788) and those were notches for whitetail killed!

I had a Remington 788 in .243 years ago. I wish I would have never sold it! Great rifle!

Bill, love those 788's also. Very handy to load and unload. And they are very accurate. Rangemaster, yes those notches are for whitetail killed, it's a quirk of mine. Someday my grand kids can see it a remember grandpa liked to hunt deer. Bill, I think I will toast this years deer with a little "Yukon Jack".....Frank

Good one Frank! I've been hunting Columbian Blacktail and Mule deer in Kaliforniev for a number of years. I haven't been in a few years now but the last year I went I shot #35 and #36 bucks. I use my SA M1A topped with a Leupold VerX II 3X9.

The last deer I shot was about 18 years ago. It was the black tail 175+ lb one i shot with my M1 carbine with a WW110 jhp at more than 75 yards. (it was past the pump house, which was a measured 75 yards from the porch i shot from). one shot, quick kill, hell of an exit hole for a "pitiful weapon chambered for a worthless pistol cartridge"

I was standing on the porch in my underpants when i shot it, but that's another story, though the statute of limitations has run out....

Bill, M1A & Leupold, sounds like a good combo. and with #35 & #36 bucks it must be. Is that long range shooting out there? I should have been deer hunting today. No ducks altho I saw a bald eagle take a coot off the water. You don't see that every day! I will be hunting the rest of the week, and will get you updated.....Frank

Taking photos of guns is tough.. It's hard to get a photo that shows the gun, and yet still shows details that you want to show. And then there's light issues, background issues, positioning, etc..

My home offers one other issue, being that I don't want to take photos in sunlight in the front of my house.. Too much traffic and I don't want prying eyes to call the police because a crazy man has a gun in his front yard!!!

My wood pile in the back yard works so-so, but that's about it, and it doesn't offer enough light due to the shading from the house.

Leagle Eagle, I haven't got the BRD yet. Is there a vaccine? How about some pics of your other restorations. I'm sure we would all like to see them. I also will apologize for getting this thread off carbine's and on deer hunting......Frank
