All of those I-J's I've seen have that small hole in the bottom of the base.
I bought one years ago from a dealer at a small local show. He said it was for a I-J, but for $15 I decided to grab it.
Still have it here in a parts box....minus the leaf spring. I robbed the I J's leaf spring to fix one that had rusted in half on a Underwood sight. After cleaning the crud off the Underwood's base I found the .U. stamp.

    Charlie,

I am confused???? Were the bases Underwood's seconds? Is the sight real or repro? It is darn nice if it is a repro, with neat crimps on the pin.

I have this Underwood flip on a W code, but the leaf spring was rusted almost in two. Removed it to repair it.
Guys would be amazed at how much crud gets under there.
I used the I J's leaf spring to repair this Underwood sight.

Ah, I understand. You had me thoroughly confused, I thought you found the U in the IJ base. I wasn't reading carefully!
