    Doesn't the auxiliary spring also cover up any roughness/unevenness of the welded joint that may or may not be present and could in theory catch on the point of the bullet causing a miss-feed??? The quality/smoothness of the welded joints do seem to vary a little from mag to mag.

    Yes, it would act that way later Flying, especially with the mass produced sub contracted magazines but the early mass were gas welded down the front and rear seams and were very good internally. If you look into an early un-sprung mag you'll see fine rotary linishing marks down the centre line of the gas weld.

    To be honest, you could write a book just about the magazines and mag boxes!

    While we're here, what's the meaning of the flying10 tag? Do you own a VC10?
