Welcome to the forum. A flash hider on a No.4 rifle would be a later non-military modification. More details or pictures would help with an evaluation.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. I will accept PayPal, Zelle, MO and good old checks (and cash if you want to stop by for a tour!). CLICK BANNER to send me a PM for International pricing and shipping. Manufacturer of various vintage rifle scopes for the 1903 such as our M73G4 (reproduction of the Weaver 330C) and Malcolm 8X Gen II (Unertl reproduction). Several of our scopes are used in the CMP Vintage Sniper competition on top of 1903 rifles. Brian Dick ... Regarding the Faz/ROF6 made PF serial numbers detailed above. Am I right in assuming from this that there were duplicated PF serial numbers allocated on Mk1 AND Mk2 rifles. This seems (or rather, IS......) totally alien to the numbering sequence. It was my understanding that Mk1 rifle production had ceased in order to change over to the much slower production of the new Mk2 although the 'H' block were still going hammer and tongs FTR'ing

We know that the Fazakerley FTR's that had a lost or missing or indecipherable or illegible number were allocated Y serial number prefixes (that would become YY after the Yxxxxx ran out) as it preceded the War Department lost or missing number prefix of Z and ZZ

The original and lost number batches were allocated by the old MoS at the direction of the recipient, in this case the War Department. After the MoS ceased, that office was taken over by the now Ministry of Defence and still exists. Indeed, they will still issue 'lost or missing' numbers and specify serial number batches, range and prefixes (my L96 is UA 86A-xxxx C) to manufacturers even today.

It would seem quite incredible that a serial number batch was issued twice although stranger things have happened. In fact Mk1 and 2 UKicon made Brens overlapped for a short while at the V prefix but that was only to allow production to continue unbroken.

In short, anyone got a PF numbered Mk1 in the Mk2 production range............. Can we show any duplication or as near duplication as it's possible to get?
