Sure looks like a J with some wear on the vertical leg to me in the slingwell, and the very small crossed canons on the right side that is sometimes in the slingwell.

I am just glad Charlie showed up!

(If you think skating on thin ice makes you feel uncomfortable, try tap-dancing on it!)

Charlie, I am a bit confused about the grain of that wood. I was looking at the uneven swirls of the grain, light color and large area of no cellular structure. I understand your recognition of it being walnut. What do I need to look for next time to break the tie?

    TR,
These aren't the best pictures I could have taken, but here's a WRA Type III that I thought at first was Birch. One side almost the color of bamboo, the other darker like natural walnut.
It has those large circular areas. Notice that the slingwell doesn't have that taper we expect to see on WRA made stocks. But it has the 3 holes under the buttplate, smaller router marks in the op slide well, wood bridge is marked with the number 62, raised wood area at the escutheon nut, divet in the bottom of the stock just forward of the mag well opening and slight bulge feel on both the left and right sides also forward of the mag well. CC on the right.

Walnut can fool you. On Birch I look for that circular ring found around the pistol grip first.

IBM in a SC-B Birch stock...

Here is the best pic of the inside sling well I could get. Not sure if it is anything. And even with extra lighting and magnifing glass, I don't see any signs of cross canons anywhere on stock.
With all this amazing help and knowledge, I've almost the courage to dismantle it to see if I can find some of the other possible markings. Can't thank enough all who have contributed to helping me.

Maybe someone on the forum lives near you in Oklahoma. Might be able to give you a hands on lesson.

I've already learned more than I could have expected and am grateful to all who posted. Carbine Club membership in the mail. With these new guns my son has now shown an interest in obtaining an M14icon. Any suggestions on best ( trusted ) method to purchase one of these. Thank you.

Thanks Charlie! No one questions that you are the resident expert on wood. I have refinished both birch, walnut and something that came from Italyicon (who knows what wood). You are right, that top one does look like birch to me!

Sorry to hijack the tread with a learn in wood.
