Before I got to page two of this thread I was thinking about a Garand I had 15 years ago that had the same timing issue as you have. In my case the accelerator had been installed backwards in the op rod catch. In your case you are missing the accelerator completely. You should find one on-line but it may be easier to buy a complete op rod catch. You may also run into businesses that do not want to ship to Canada. Maybe a member here can help you out or start emailing sellers on websites or fleabay and ask if they would ship to Canada

Thanks Ralfus, I think that accelerator must be the problem and I've ordered a new catch online. I have an address in the US, and order everything in the good old US. Free delivery mostly, not gouged to death on the price and a half hour drive to the border. Cheers.
