Judging by your descripition, mine must be the later Winchester handguard with the two milling scars. What do you think?

Hey Bob,
I'm trying to picture what I can before any cleaning,
But after wiping a light layer of grease (or a paste wax) off the bottom edge of mine, I can just see 2 circular milling marks (Router?) But they aren't as heavy as I've seen on later ones. Don't really know, maybe just another case of the operators style?
I haven't handled that many Bullnose Hg's to know.

When removing the slide, I noticed the Slide Stop Pin doesn't pull all the way up, causing some drag on the rail. It has left some burrs inside the slide stop hole and rubbing finish off the spring tubes mounting lug
Have tried to note this with a few pics. Scars seem to show it's been that way for quite a while. A good cleaning getting some crud away from the spring and slide stop may help.

Also see wear patterns on the rear of the bolt/firing pin to the front of the hammer face, that are consistent.
I'm not that far so no pictures yet, but only Dogleg hammer strike on the Trigger housing.
Op Slide grooves and Bolt to receiver all appear original.
Slide Cam to Right Bolt Lug do match with wear on the high edges.

I'm really wanting to get this cleaned up, but have realized it seems much easier to look for wear patterns before doing so.
I hope I'm not boring most of you.
But a few had asked if I could try to document this carbine as I tore it down.

Isn't this round looking mark on top of the Extractor something we went over a while back?

Are those early TH pins hard to deal with? What about the slide stop retention, is it the early type too? Keep those pictures coming!

Hey Charlie,

Yes that circular mill mark on the extractor is a definite Winchester trait. Your appears to be "in the white" and is identical to two of my Winchesters.

The operating slide can be a royal pain to remove on type 1 receivers. The rectangular hole for the detachable spring housing lug is also for the removal of the slide. Later types had a second notch in the upper slide groove for removal.

I can tell you that mine feels as if it's going to break before it finally pops out of that rectangular hole. Same thing upon assembly. It has to be snapped in (hard). The later design allows for a much easier slide removal.

Trigger Housing pin wasn't hard, just made sure it came out easy by adding a little oil last night. I DID NOT attempt to pull the inner spring out of it.
The Slide stop is the Type II, and I belive it would be correct for this range. It has a blued finish on it, visible in one of the pictures I posted earlier (I think?).

Bill H, Thank you. Other than being dirty, I also see very limited use and am really happy I didn't get in a hurry to clean it up before I documented the parts. This has made this much easier to find any matching wear.

dbarn, The Extractor looks blued on the bottom (not as blue as the bolt) And the top looks like the grey park at times. I'll have to get a better look outside later. Maybe just a case of taking picture overload.... like trying to see in a white out!
If you look at the picture above showing the Extractor next to the blued firing pin... they seem to match. But when installed on the bolt has a different shade, more grey. I just don't know yet. Wiped clear of grime will surely help.
Knew the slide would be a bit tricky and was nervous about removing it, but popped out ok. With that tab on the bottom I knew it could only come out 1 way.

I have the Trigger Housing and internals off, but am burnt out trying to get them to photobucket, in some kind of order and then posted here. I'll try to post those Monday.
I have a 6 page file album (which will be quite larger when finished) on this one in photobucket that I'll share the complete link to, when I get them all up-loaded and in some kinda order.

Again, Feel free to request any pictures you may want to see. Your request may be one I haven't thought about taking. I sure wish I had taken the time to do this with my other carbines. In time I will as I do have some pretty poor picture records of most.

These are some of the last 'Before Cleaning Pictures'
I now have this one completely cleaned/De-grimed.
After my Hoppes #9 buzz dies off, I'll lube and assemble.

The Last Picture Shows What I Believe To Be a Type 1 Trigger Converted to a Type 2, by grinding the face of the pedestal, but I could be wrong -

Anyone know if a WRA type 1 trigger was ever spotted with the inverted W?
