I used to have a papered M2. I shot cast bullet reloads in it without any problem. I just didn't let it get too hot. If I really wanted to play, I used jacketed 110 gr FMJs (reloads). Reloading saved a whole bunch of $.

Yes, my metal handguard is commercial. IMHO, stainless steel is a better material in every way than wood, i.e. an actual improvement for the carbine.

If you want to cut your ammo costs by 2/3 or so, you should seriously consider reloading, although brass and bullets are not so easy to find just now. But I've been accumulating materials over several years, and you've got a year, at least.

To do so, of course, you need to invest in capital equipment too. So watch your junk mail. Recently, one of the banking bailouts desperate for clients made me an offer I couldn't refuse, so I purchased a new Dillon 550B at a very steeply discounted price. Promises to be much faster than my 50 year old Lyman Spar T. Now the bottleneck is trimming cases

y'all are right, this is going to require reloading. like you say, i've got what will probably be a year to round up the material and equipment.
up until now all the FA stuff shoot has been .380 and 9mm and wasn't worth the trouble to reload just for target shooting and mag dumps. but if prices don't come down soon i may have to load these as well.
i don't understand why manufacturers all over the world aren't rushing to fill this ammo vacuum. and why it's taking so long. for g*d's sake, you can't even find 22lr where i live. 22lr !

next question, is there a serial number after which all carbines were built to M2 spec?
were re-arsenaled guns built back to M2 spec. ok that was two questions.
i'm trying to save everyone's time while looking for a host for this trigger pack.

hi all,
i've decided to take the advice offered here on this forum and i've found what seems to be a nice one in my area. it's an Inland with a 6.2 mil serial number and a 10/44date. however, it has a flat bolt and an M1 slide. how hard are the M2 versions of these parts to find and what might i expect to pay? are these parts a direct swap or will they need to be fitted?

There is really no difference between a M1 spec gun and a M2 spec gun ( except for the different parts to make it FA ) . The round bolt is perfered over the flat due to strength , but the round bolt came out before the M2s , so it is a M1 upgrade , to split hairs . The pot belly stock was introduced because part of the internal bridge had to be removed for the rocker arm , weakening the M1 stock. Same idea behind the M2 slide box vs. machined down M1 .
These M2 parts should be easy to find . Figure $75-$100 each. Not fitted , but headspace should be checked any time a bolt is switched out.

When looking for an M2 slide, try to get an original stamped with the part number (7161843) rather than one made from an M1 slide which might not have been a type 5 - Inland, Winchester, Saginaw, and HSA are 4 mfgs I have in my collection. All work, no fitting required. Also be mindful of the tabs which fit the receiver rail. Extreme wear causes the slide arm to disengage from the receiver at inappropriate moments under fire.

i was just about to pull the trigger on a new slide and bolt i found on sturmgewehr when i remembered the guy i bought the trigger pack from had mentioned it came with some other stuff. so i gave him a call. turns out it also includes two spare M2 slides and round bolts! i think i'll wait and see what they look like.

i'm beginning the search for my first M1 carbine. actually, i'm looking for a transferable M2 or registered M2 trigger group for a conversion. this seemed like a good place to start and from what i've read so far it's a very knowledgeable group. I've got 2 of L Ruth's books which should keep me from asking to many really stupid questions. so have mercy on a newbie and i'll try and pay it forward when i have something to contribute.

it just transferred to my dealer and since i don't have a trust my paper work is at my CLEO waiting for his signature. usually takes about a week to 10 days and then off to ATF. right now i understand that's about 9 mos to 1 year. you need to have patience if your into NFA toys.
this is a registered trigger housing and is supposed to come with everything i need to convert an M1 to M2 spec. including stock, slide, bolt, selector, etc.
