The box not being squared didn't throw me off at first as I have Savage rifles with a square "S" and incomplete box markings. An example is clearly in one of the photos in the links posted by Badger and LE and it shows the familiar incomplete box example. The round "S", corner-less box and as LE points out, the machining, definitely casts a shadow of doubt but based on first glance, the absence of any other information or example, I wouldn't know who else to attribute the mark to.

Something kept eating at me about this mark so I finally brushed off the laziness and dug out some of my Savages.

This one is on a 62C series rifle. I bought it as a "U- Fix it" and it needed only a safety assembly. Everything Savage marked with matching bolt.

This one is on a 79C series Greek Delta marked rifle. All Savage with matching bolt. It also has FR on the buttstock.

I have a 2C, 4C, 7C and 9C Mk. I Savage. All but the 7C have early button cocking pieces. The 7C has a Longbranch cocking piece with a very poorly struck LB mark on it. Could it have been changed? Sure, anything is possible and logic dictates it most likely has been but it has been on the rifle a long time. I should also note the 7C has FR on the buttstock.

I'm pretty sure I can't be the only human being on the face of the planet with not 1, but 3 examples of this odd mark. I'll bet is we ask others to check theirs, we'll see many more. I think we should do it.
