Oiler Question

GI oilers I've seen from early 70's packaging are unmarked. I'll have to look at one of mine to see, but believe it has a rubber washer or o-ring. They might be flatter on the end than WWII issue, but not sure. If so, they should be easy to stamp whatever you want on them. Saw one on eBay a few years back that was stamped Inland, etc. on the side. Members here figured it was a reproduction of some kind. - Bob

Bob, Now that there's 2 here on Milsurps I'm going to keep trying every once in awhile to find out if some Company did make these for a VERY short while and maybe some got out before removing the Stamp. I know these are not from WW2 or Korea, but I would like to know just for the heck of it. Just seeing the one I got in that batch looks like it was used for quite awhile and this one looks Brand New is why I would like to know.

To back Jim's post: I have what is thought to be an original example 5.6 Winchester. It has one of the SW on the cap oilers. I have had this thing since 1969.

Regarding the US oilers: the oilers were originally marked to match the manufacturer making the carbine so when they gun was issued, a sling and oiler would be part of the delivered package. After a while, as the various makers stopped production, the oilers were allowed to just be marked IS to identify the maker of the oiler. Beyond that nothing more was required. My question is: If these oilers were in fact genuine, would they not be required to have the maker noted? The US is a pointless mark since we know it is made for a US arm and is in use by the US services.

I have a SW Stamped on the Cap Oiler, but when i bought my 5.65 Winchester it had a IW. I read and was told the SW was on Winchesters 1st and 2nd block of production. I always wondered if a IW was actually made for a Winchester or they were fake. I thought a 5.65 mil range should have a IS marked one by that time ?

Could there have been a manufacturer of the oiler which happened, by chance, to have the initials "U.S."? Is there a definitive list of all the manufacturers who produced this type of oiler in the U.S.A.?

Dave is saying in post 23 that the "U.S." is a pointless mark and I am asking if there was a manufacturer with these initials. I'm sorry if I've missed a definitive list of all American manufacturers of M1 oilers in this thread but perhaps someone would, please, indicate in which post they are all listed. Thanks

Frank, Here's a picture I just found on my computer of another one. It looks like I downloaded this in early 2014. I asked another "Carbine Guy" at a show last weekend about U.S. marked oilers. He was aware of them and feels they are not USGI. - Bob

Bob, Thanks for finding another one, I always knew that these where NOT USGI Oilers. I just been trying to find out where they came from. Someone had to make them and very, very few at that. I was more curious to where they originated from and who had used that US marking. The one in your picture has the same 2 dimples and that 1 dot in between the 2 letters. It looks identical to the other 2 oilers. One day hopefully someone will know who tried to make these. Maybe some Mfg Co. started to use that stamping and very, very quickly changed it. Who knows ? There was one listed on eBay just last week that the seller implied was USGI. I suspect we will see more and more of them as time goes by, but maybe never a ton.
