BTW, the carbine round is actually not a true .308. It is .3075 diameter. So you really can't get a true picture of wear using one. That extra .005 makes a big difference.
When they tell you to behave, they always forget to specify whether to behave well or badly!
Not sure if this is whats on the OP's sight but these 2 examples are what I had in mind.

Hey guys I have a question. It was stated earlier in this thread to use a GI M2 ball round, not a commercially made one. I do not have or have ever had a surplus GI M2 Ball round, but I do have plenty of PPU 30-06 specifically for M1Garand.are the PPU dimensions exactly the same as the GI M2 ball round or is it just the commercial stuff that you can't use to estimate muzzle wear? I know PPU is obviously commercial, but would it be close enough for me to estimate my muzzle wear on my Winchester carbine?

30.06 Springfield FMJ seated to the top of the cannelure, ( sp ? ) should work fine as far as I know. I believe 150 gr, but guessing.
I don't shoot or load these. Someone will help 'Us' out.

And with a carbine it doesn't take too much rifling to group reasonably well either. That barrel he showed us should be fine. If you seat them to correct OAL for ball as stated in the book they are the same. OAL is OAL. The bullet weight matters for OAL... Factory will be close enough.

A couple years ago I had a 5 rd. stripper clip of .30-06 M1Ball, something like a 172 or 173 gr. bullet. After I sold it, I wished I would've tried using one for a "bullet test" on a carbine - don't know if the results would be the same, but probably not. - Bob
