That'll never work out. Just hunt down a decent barrel and send it to Chuckindenver for changing. He won't leave any marks either when he does it. https://www.milsurps.com/member.php?u=5812

If you post a WTB hereabouts in the correct forum someone may hand you a barrel too. Maybe Chuck has one...

    No, they don't do that.

Ill post a WTB. Id rather spend the money and restore the thing to mil spec than alter, and though it is and will be for some time on display at the Texas Veteran Museum here in Denton, Ill just have to hope no one notices it is altered

Neat that you do displays at local museums, I still do schools on vet days, but no firearms are allowed. I hope you get your rifle back to original.

Well now, if the end result desired is wall hanging that changes everything. You should be able to find an original barrel pretty cheap, if you don't care about the condition of the bore. Post in the WTB. A lot of people here are doing the opposite...putting a good bore on a shot out one to make an authentic shooter, and have the old one lying on the shelf.

From butt to muzzle, mine measures the same 46+3/8. My rifle still has an "R" stamped on the tip of the wood, although the rifle is Winchester.

The rear handgaurd ring sits pretty far back, right up against the lettering.

To test if your barrel was cut back or turned back, measure from the receiver, as in the photo below, to the muzzle. Mine measures 26+7/8.

Re-crowning could be a simple as just shaving back to remove any nicks etc., or a counterboring and/or cutting back to get rid of wear or cleaning rod damage, etc., or anywhere in between.

If you have your heart set on bayonet fighting, easiest fix is to just set back the front band. Very easy to do with a sharp chisel. Wrap a piece of tape around where you want it to end up, tap your chisel in along the edge of the tape, perpendicular to the wood, then shave back the shoulder. repeat both steps until the new shoulder is nice and square, and the longer "lip" is the right depth. Then file it down to the right length. I would shoot it first to make sure it warrants the extra work.

it's been 6+ months since I shot mine...Thanks! Now that I have it out of safe...

EDIT: looks like your handgaurds + rear ring are different than mine and 72_usmc's, and your barrel has been turned back or re-threaded as some of the markings are cut off, e.g. "18 tonnes per...".

The receiver photos and measurement of the flat area where the barrel screws into the receiver. This flat area is 1 1/4 inch long from the joint where the barrel fits the receiver out to the curved contour . From joint edge to barrel contour =3cm

Barrel length from the barrel /receiver joint out to the muzzle my CMPicon Remington M1917 is 25 1/4 inch long with the hand guards removed. Or 64 cm.

Some other measurements from the barrel of the Remington are seen in the lower photos:
Barrel is a 2 or 3 19 barrel date Rifle has some Eddystone small parts

I have seen more than a few M1917 US Enfields at gun shows that close on a field gauge. Most likely someone set the barrel back and set the headspace perfect. You got a nice shooter. There are plenty of M1917 at shows, but bring a FIELD 30-06 headspace gauge and bore light if you are going to drop $1000 plus for a correct rifle so the bayonet fits and it is still a good shooter. Lots of older guys are down sizing due to age and health. Last week at the West Bend WI show there was a nice one priced at $1200. It seemed intact with correct cartouches. Remington I believe??? I liked them when they were $400.
    Prices be crazy now...
There was a Winchester at $1800, too pricy to even handle. I just looked and walked by. A nice 1954 Polish Tok say a $300 pistol for $675 and US GI 45 autos in the $3000 range. You got to be a young guy with a great job to get nice stuff in todays market. It was kind of funny, Mosins at $400-500 and that is stuff I paid $49-79.

Actually as that M1917 sits no one at a CMPicon shoot would see any difference. It might be a tack driver.
