........... while we always retain our old ranks as a common courtesy, I abandoned all of that stuff the day I took my uniform off for the last time and am now a plain Mr......
Not here - not in the world of Enfields (and probably others as well).
I think the Rank is a courteous recognition of your knowledge, long may you be recognised as such.
Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

It does appear to be "2/6". The disc doesn't look like it has been there "forever", but that could mean several different things.
And Frederick303 you must be an astute observer as I have long thought that your posts were some of the best written & informed 'about these here parts'.

“There are invisible rulers who control the destinies of millions. It is not generally realized to what extent the words and actions of our most influential public men are dictated by shrewd persons operating behind the scenes.”
Edward Bernays, 1928

Yes, after looking at the right hand side, I would say it is Irish, reworked around 1922 for the Irish Free State. It has the expected Enfield mark on the action body, just above the gas hole.
Disc was added later.
