The cheek piece was contoured by the sniper to suit himself. They did all sorts of things. I've seen them covered in leather and rasped to all sorts of shapes so you could reasonably leave it as it was. I never saw one covered in rubber though........... although some snipers might have been into rubber!

The wood looks really nice to me - unless a rifle that old and historically interesting is absoluteley covered in grease/crud/mud etc I would leave well alone.
