I had an M2 carbine on my boat in Viet Nam with 30 round magazines. If 40 round magazines were available and reliable I would have wanted them. Heck, that's a 33% round increase that could have come in handy. I could have cared less what it looked like. It wasn't built for looks.
In a war environment, agreed! For civilian use, the larger mags look like dammit...

Not trying to be argumentative, but it wasn't designed or built for civilian use.
Personally I think it looks best with a 15 round magazine. And they run great.

I do agree that 15s are best for reliability and handiness. 30 rounders look a lot meaner, though. Back before it was common for LEOs to have ARs, etc. I carried a carbine as a trunk weapon. I had a 30 in it, and two fifteens in the stock pouch. It always got respect from the bad guys that were on the wrong end of it!
I had an aftermarket 40 rounder for the carbine that I picked up years ago at a gunshow, but it was totally unreliable. I eventually got rid of it.
