Not too sure why the trigger guard wouldn't stay locked when shooting, the lugs look good. Maybe it wasn't fully locked at first. The rust is your thing, I'd get rid of it. I expect the rifle will shoot to spec once you have a chance to try it in better conditions. I wouldn't worry about the one fail to load you had. Wait for better conditions and go again.

I've used many things for rust depending on how harsh it is. It's really hard to tell from your pics, it looks like it's just fine rust in the finish. Mostly color so to speak. Fine steel wool and oil might work, but it takes lots of elbow grease to do it. Most cases require a re-finish after. If that's what's happening anyways, just do a bead blast and parkerize. It'll come out like new then...

That is what I thought. I was worrying about getting rid of the rust and keeping the finish. I really wanted to just clean it all up, get a new barrel, and a fresh parkerize ...

I'm still not convinced you need a new barrel, but it's hard to see from here. Mind, I've removed what some would say was a near perfect Danish return barrel in .30 cal and replaced it with a new barrel in 7.62...because it was what I wanted to do.

I decided that this rifle is a keeper and is worth making right. It's an piece of history and an investment. I'm going to send it out to get professionally spec'd (I've done my novice work and it all checks as far as tolerances go but she's going to a pro), bead blasted, parkerized, and a new barrel (unless it really doesn't need one at all). I'm shopping around for a place to have it done.
