M47 is the designation for made by Birmingham Small Arms (BSA)

    FY is a Fazakerley designation

My error before: It's not RMP, its FMP -- Federation of Malaysian Police

The gun's receiver (from your first pictures) is a Faz, but it's constructed with both Faz and BSA components. This isn't unusual, and, as Capt. Laidlericon has said so often, when guns received repairs, the Armourers grabbed whatever parts were necessary to make the fix -- giving no regard for the part's origin. And many were built at the factory from mixed origin parts.

In M-1 parlance, this gun is referred to as a "mixmaster," which is not a degrading term, it just refers to the multitudes of repairs made to an old girl who's seen a lot of action in the field.

Please, don't worry about restoring this to a "pure" gun -- she's a mongrel now, always was, and should remain so. Let the gun's varied parts speak volumes to her colourful history. And don't worry about "dumb" questions -- I asked the same types of questions once, and fortunately a lot of patient members answered. But do go back through the multitude of threads (see bottom of this page to start) and see what many many others have learned. And be sure to read every one of Captain Laidler's expert advisory posts.

great to hear! yea I was little worried about it having so many different parts and if that took away from it being an original no 5 jungle carbine! I guess on a bright-side it's good that it has seen a lot of action! As long as it's an authentic JC. By the way do you know by chance what bore brush to use in the 303? I've heard 32 but ive also heard 30 is fine also which is what I use now and even the 30 is tight in the 303.

I thought that the original kit would have been a pull-through and 4x2 cloths to the clean the bore? I use a 30 cal BoreSnake though for my No4, No5 and L4 Bren.

So i'm trying to take this rear sight off and I don't see any vertical pin at all..can someone show me what it's supposed to look like? maybe I'm just being stupid cause id assume if I didnt have a pin then the screws would fall out.

This is what my No5 looks like. My No4 looked the same. Maybe both ends of the pin have broken off but it is still enough in the hole to stop the screw head pin sliding, or someone has enlarged the end?

As scoobsean has said, there may be a piece of the pin broken off inside the retaining hole. When you put yours back together, I found that a snip of paper clip was a good substitute in lieu of having the real pin.

And remember, this is a "pin" not a screw, even though it has a screw head on the right side. You drive it out with a pin/drift punch. The screw head is simply there to align the retaining pin hole when you reassemble. I've encountered two types of pins -- one where the screw slot aligns with the retaining hole and one where the screw slot is perpendicular to the hole -- check yours before you reinstall.

See if you can drift out the big pin. It you get it out, you can clean out the retaining hole with a small drill or maybe a tiny punch. You could then fashion a new retaining pin from something like a little brass tack. It is just to stop the large pin being shaken out under recoil

Yes, the No5 is just a shorter, lighter No4

couldn't I just buy a no4 retaining pin and use that? I'd hate to use something like a paper clip or brass tack it would bug the hell out of me :P Scoob or anyone do you have a no5 retaining pin by chance?

Then give it a tap at the small end and it should move to the right. I don't see a pin but the hole seems closed, it may be shorn off.
