This is quite interesting. After taking a flash photo of the hand guard it is quite evident there was an effect to the finish...I’m now sure the paint was removed. This is not at all evident to the naked eye in normal light (modern digital photography is more amazing every day). Also attached is a photo of the R bolt markings. I can’t see any sign of repair or replacement. I'm now convinced this is of the same lend/lease bloodline, but of a batch that was British proofed...Serial # is actually 3,051,440. Barrel 1-42. Your rifle did indeed once have a red band. In addition to the discolored wood where the red paint was removed, I can see traces of the red paint on the lower band.
