It doesn't feature in the 2010 engineers Machinery's Handbook
Military vehicle owners are the worst......... John if you still have had no luck I think I've a few spares , I buy boxes and bits off car boot sales so sometimes have a few extra, I'm in the workshop today doing a bit on my Matchless and a few other jobs.......so will have a look
Out of interest, what's the thread system on the Matchless? BS-Whitworth? The Centurion is/was the worst offender. BSW and BSF and then then UNC and UNF........ except when it wasn't convenient! Radios and instruments, yep...... BA! Agricultural dealers are a good source of nuts, bolts etc as they still cater for some old stuff on the farms
BSF and the cycle thread BSC/BSCy (60 degree thread angle) mine going throughout service life has had a few changes here and there, UNC and UNF and a few metric thrown in for good luck.
On the subject of threads I'm just looking at suppliers of imperial threaded bar in stainless to make my own crancase bolts etc.

I'll leave the thread open for now, but think before you post ...
Some folks still need to re-read about our Forum Etiquettepolicy they agreed to under our Terms of Service Agreement" they electronically signed when they joined.

I have a couple of those taps in my tool box marked 1/4-26 BSF USA. They're made here even though mine both came from the UK
so I know they're available in North America! I never shop for the cheapest deal on Ebay from India. In fact, I never shop for ANYTHING on Ebay. I think you'll find that the extra cost of buying first rate tools will be made up for tenfold in aggravation screwing around with crap imported from the third world. Much like their No.32 telescope brackets and pads. I gave up on that junk a long time ago too. Live and learn.
It's worth paying that little bit extra for High Speed Steel taps and dies, which will be marked as HSS on the tool, rather than the cheaper carbon steel taps and dies which don't last as long.
Thanks, bigduke, I wasn't sure if it was the same as cycle thread.
I sure didn't pay monetarily but am paying now.... this one is HSS which lead me to the purchase, but I'll try a couple local bike restoreres.
Brian, to save me future headache and a little time, would you be willing to part with a tap?
