Need some info on this krag i found
Hi guys need some info on this krag i found in this gunsmith estate i am going thru. It is marked 1894 US Springfield Armory 23702.. paper tag said krag rare.. the stock looks to be a krag stock that was sporterized. but i also have a full krag with all hard ware that was in same box with it. sights look to be orginal. my question are why would it be rare. what would ball park value be. is it safe to shoot with standard 30-40 loads. bore is perfect, action is smooth all working order. Thanks mike http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k2...pse84d83a2.jpg http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k2...ps87b9a31e.jpg http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k2...ps29ec028c.jpg http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k2...psbfb7a01c.jpg http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k2...ps4c87b788.jpg http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k2...ps74ce6af8.jpg

It appears to be an early krag with an odd stock. cant wait to hear what others say.

yes NRA stock is realy different still has trap in butt late looks like they redid an orginal krag stock an added a pistol grip to wrist area. realy thinned down fore end. the other stock that was stored with it look all orginal an all hard wear too.

Two things could make it rare. One, it's very near the end of 1892 production, and very near the end of the Armory using the 1894 marked receivers. Second, it is also near the not fully known range of 400 rifles made for West Point, the Model 1896 Cadet rifles. However, I think they were all built on 1895 marked receivers. Consequently, it is now just another cut down sporterized rifle. What about the other one?

Hi thank you for that info my gun book doesnt list much about different serial numbers. the other stock that was wrapped up with this rifle looks like it is the orginal one for the rifle. Possably this was used as a deer rifle an they keep orginall stock to put back on if sold. I still have many boxes of military type items to go thru. Some are big enough for them to have rifles. Will keep u you updated with next krag i get unwrapped. I do have other post with other military rilfes i have found. Thanks mike
