No Krag serial numbers in SRS data within 1.5 K, on either side of #296397.

I appreciate you checking. Is it unusual not to see a serial number in the SRS database? Is there anyway to determine the month and week of production? The cartouche is dated 1900.

Actually, we're surprised when we DO find one. We find them close and sometimes a block of them appears to be issued to a certain unit. Not finding one isn't unusual. Without the number, it's hard to determine anything.

'phoneman91' - Your model 1898 Krag, #296397, was probably assembled and accepted for service around October or November, 1900.
Only a small percentage of Krag rifle serial numbers were found in U.S. official documents and were included in SRS data.

Ok, I'll start a new thread - yes it is a ceremonial rifle.
