Browning belt filling machine
I need some advice on the model 1918 Browning belt filling machines.
Someone offers me two of them like the examples on the photos (these are not the real one’s of the offer). One has brass components, the other is completely in steel.
I am only going to buy one, so which one would I choose?
One is rarer than the other? Is there a difference in collectible value?
All other info is welcome.
thanks

The brass is earlier I think. Brass was always taken from service for critical components during war. The steel would last longer in use but I seriously doubt you'll be able to wear it out. Choose which ever rings your bell.

Best thing would to load a couple of belts and pick the smoothest loader . I've found the brass ones tend to load better , prob'ly because of pre-war vs war time hurry. Brass would also have a higher coolness factor.

In the first place, it's for my collection, I don't think I will use it. Is there a difference in collectible value?

If they're in equal condition, I should think the earlier one would be more valuable.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for your advice.
I have not yet been able to "inspect" them (maybe tomorrow).
Do you think they would both be dated?I am a ww2 collector, so it is always nice if there is a date is present.
regards,
John

They may be dated but you might have to look closely. I think the brass fitted one should be the earlier model though.

Yes , they'll be dated. Look on the top plate by the bullet feed tower or underneath on the body around the bolt down lug.
