old cleaner-riflebore GI issue question

I just found an old 6oz square can, OD in color, GI type bore cleaner and opened it up to see about using it to clean my 03 bore and found that the fluid is creamy white in color, not clear or smelly like current hoppes or other gun cleaner types. Is this the correct color for this cleaner,?? I think it is wwII stuff? thanks, dugga

Yep, that what it should look like. If you think Hoppes smells bad, be glad the can you opened didn't contain the other WW2 bore cleaner that's brown in color. The smell of that stuff is putrid.

Hey Gewehr,

Careful about what you say about the manly aroma of Hoppes. It is the only cologne I use. Think some here would agree about it's chick magnet properties when wearing a drop at a show. It also has good anti-depressant properties enjoyed by some of our seniors here. Produces some interesting posts also.

Had a can of that old brown/red bore cleaner. It had a slow leak and I ditched it. It certainly wasn't cologne quality.

When I was in the National Guard we used to test that old WWII bore cleaner. It would go "bad" and we had a test kit for detecting just that. Mind you, we had the stuff by the gallon. It smelled so bad the troops didn't like to clean their weapons, a real problem.

The milky stuff is great for cleaning after shooting corrosive ammo.
